What is Menopause?

Picture
"Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her reproductive cycles end. It is part of a biological process that for most women is first noticed in their mid-forties. During this transition, the ovaries start producing lower levels of natural sex hormones--Estrogen and Progesterone" (Wikipedia).

The symptoms of menopause start months or years before actually the cycles stop (perimenopause), usually in the 40's.Symptoms of Menopause include: Hot flushes, Irritability, Difficulty sleeping, Lack of sexual desire, Depression, Anxiety, Weight gain, Thinning hair, Thinning of skin, Itchy skin, Decrease memory, Lack of concentration and others.

What is manopause/Andropause

Picture
Manopause/andropause is the decline, in males, of Testosterone levels all throughout the body. Unlike in women where menopause can be clearly defined by the stop of cycles and fertility, andropause in men is a slow process of decrease in production of Testosterone over the years.

Recent studies show that one in five males under the age of 40 have low testosterone.

Symptoms of andropause include: Fatigue, Decrease strength , Osteoporosis, Decrease libido, more difficult erections, Lack of motivation and others.

Treatment is supplementation of testosterone transdermally or by injection. In the younger patient it is preferable to use HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) to stimulate the Leydig cells to produce testosterone (if there is no failure of Leydig cells), with this method there is no loss of testicular volume and no decrease in sperm count that you get with testosterone replacement.
